When it comes to events, I’m always about making sure that everyone is fed.
Have you ever gone to an event and been like, “Oh good, nothing to eat! Just what I was hoping for.” Ummm, my guess is no. Food is one of the BEST parts about any celebration.
Especially the dessert, which is usually the star of the show.
But if you have dietary restrictions, you’re probably left feeling a bit jealous (and hungry) as everyone circles around the cake like a flock of hungry seagulls. Maybe you anticipated this and packed yourself a granola bar. Or maybe you got hungry and ate that granola bar two hours ago. Sigh. Such is the life of the dietarily-restricted.
It doesn’t have to be this way, though! The greater Seattle area actually has a ton of bakeries that specialize in allergy friendly desserts, or can at least accommodate dietary restrictions. You can even get amazing custom cakes. So to all those couples out there with dietary restrictions, you can still get a delicious vegan or gluten-free wedding cake for your big day that’s just as stunning as any other wedding cake.
Even if you don’t personally have dietary restrictions, it is such a kind and memorable gesture to offer a little something for the family and friends that do.
I can say this from experience! There was an unfortunate period of time where I had to follow a gluten-free diet for medical reasons (in addition to being a dairy-free vegetarian in general). I just happened to attend a wedding around that time and I’m pretty sure the only thing I could eat at dinner was the salad (essentially lettuce). And there were definitely no acceptable desserts. My mouth was watering looking at my fiancé’s plate after he loaded up at the dessert bar.
Do you know how thrilled I would have been to find even just one gluten-free item waiting for me? T.H.R.I.L.L.E.D.
It’s no fun leaving an event feeling hungry (or hangry.) That’s why I always suggest asking your guests for any allergies or dietary restrictions when they RSVP. It’s helpful to know ahead of time to plan accordingly. And if you know you’re going to have guests with restrictions, ordering a couple gluten-free cupcakes or dairy-free cookies is an easy and low-cost way to ensure all your guests are included in the festivities.
To make it easy, I’ve rounded up some vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly bakeries in the Greater Seattle Area. (And as a reminder, if you are dealing with an actual allergy, make sure to talk to the bakery to ensure what you’re ordering is acceptable. Definitely not something you want to take a chance with!)
Got any other favorite allergy-friendly bakeries? Leave a comment to let me know!
